BMW has launched its smallest car, 1 Series, in India. A luxury hatchback priced at Rs 20.9 lakhs for the petrol variant, and Rs 22.9 lakhs for the diesel variant (ex-showroom Mumbai), the 1 Series is set to compete against the recently launched Mercedes Benz A-Class. Like the A-Class, the 1 Series is also targetted at younger buyers. Made at BMW facility in Chennai, which is being expanding with an additional investment of Rs 390 crores, the 1 Series is powered by a 136bhp, 1.6 litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a 143bhp, 2 litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine. Both the engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A rear-wheel drive, the 1 Series will also come with two upmarket versions of the diesel variant, priced at Rs 25.9 lakh and Rs 29.9 lakh respectively. Both the cars feature visual upgrades and will deliver a more dynamic and sporty driving experience. The only rear-wheel drive hatchback available the world over (Mercedes Benz A-Class is front wheel drive), the 1 Series features driver centric interiors and driving dynamics. The car is equipped with BMW’s iDrive that allows the driver to select one of four modes – Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport + – to best suite his/her driving needs.
