Ashok Leyland has launched new heavy commercial vehicle range called the Captain Series. The company unveiled the 25-tonne tipper, Captain 2523, the first model in the series that will come to include tractors and haulage trucks. To contain trucks with a payload of between 16-tonne GVW and 49-tonne GVW, the Captain Series trucks will come with a modern cab (day, sleeper and high roof), heavy duty aggregates and customised powertrain. Powering the series will be common-rail fuel injection engines that produce between 160 and 360hp, and are coupled to a durable transmission. Engineered to offer superior fuel efficiency, the Captain Series would increase vehicle uptime, faster turn around and reduce operating costs. Employing modern electrical and electronic architecture with self diagnostic capability, the Captain Series trucks will be produced at Pantnagar. The Captain 2523 tipper is powered by the above mentioned H-Series CRS engine coupled to a 9-speed transmission. Engineered to perform in deep mines, the tipper’s driveline includes hub-reduction technology in the rear axle. This adds extra traction to the wheels, and enable it to tackle steep gradients. Suspension is a heavy duty bogie design. The driver seat is mechanically suspended with multi-level adjustments. The steering column is adjustable for tilt, and the cabin could be equipped with air conditioning. Subjected to rigorous roll oer and crash tests, the cabin ensures low noise, vibration and harshness. Could be had in 16-tonne and 31-tonne configuration apart from the 25-tonne tipper mentioned here for tasks like deep mining as well as surface transport, the Captain Series has undergone over 2 million kms of on-road equivalent trials and reliability testing. The Captain Series trucks will be displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo.
