GM to shut Halol facility

After nearly two years of announcing closure of its Halol facility near Vadodara, the American automobile giant General Motors will down its shutters at one of its oldest facilities in India. The company had announced its plans to consolidate production at its facility at Talegaon in Maharashtra. It has not been a smooth closure for the company as a stand-off between workers and management over the remuneration for the voluntary separation scheme (VSS) and transfers to the new location hampered the process. At least 600 workers have demanded higher compensation package under the VSS scheme, union leaders claimed. At Halol, GM had suspended Cruze (sedan) production some time ago, while it will stop Tavera (utility vehicle) production.
