…says Vishal Kabadi, Chief Operating Officer, Operations of Magneti Marelli Motherson Auto System Ltd (MMM), while highlighting emerging trends in automotive lighting technology.
What kind of opportunities are you looking at automotive lighting systems space?
Magneti Marelli Motherson Auto System Private Limited (MMM) is a leading supplier of world class products and technologies in the passenger car exterior segment. We have created a capacity of more than 1.5 million cars for both rear lamp and head lamp applications as we grow along with the OEMs.
How will your company gain from the rise in usage of LEDs?
We are in a joint venture with Automotive Lighting GmbH, a global leader of innovative lighting systems and part of the Magneti Marelli S.p.A. Through this collaboration, we have access to leading technologies which can be brought into India as per market demand.
A lighting product, being a styling point for the car, has a major role to play in the overall differentiation of the vehicle. As more and more of our customers move towards improving the styling quotient of their vehicles and increase use of LEDs, we will be well placed to gain momentum from this trend through our global tie ups. The LED headlamp also contributes in reduction in fuel consumption and emissions and enhance safety due to better visibility at night.
How are you tapping the emerging trends in the market?
Our focus at MMM has always been on the customer and being prepared for their requirements, regardless of whether the ask comes from a design perspective or government regulations.
Enjoying a global leader position means access to the latest technologies and knowhow, which in turn translate to being able to create solutions for a vehicle, no matter what kind. So this will be true for energy efficient vehicles as well as is already the case with some of the customers that we are working with.
What are your growth plans?
The evolution of the Indian market has taken place with the movement from halogen bulb based technologies on the HL to projector and full LED HL. We have a number of products under development – both HID and LED modules and in mass production – example – Jeep Compass HL. Starting first quarter of 2019, you will see a big trend moving towards similar products across different segments of vehicles.
On the rear lamp, the market moved earlier towards usage of LEDs to stress upon high styling quotients and signature lighting; you can already see these in the market quite extensively. We believe that the market will continue to move in this direction opening new avenues of growth for us.
