Mahindra has announced an entry into the FIA Formula E championship through Mahindra Racing. Mahindra is the eight team from the total of ten teams that will participate in the inaugural season of the all-electric Formula E Championship set to start in September 2014 at Beijing. Second global motorsports platform Mahindra has taken part in, the MotoGP World Championship being the first, Mahindra Racing’s efforts will be supported by Mahindra Reva. Expected to help create an awareness among viewers about the latest electric vehicle technologies, while also giving manufacturers the chance to develop new technologies on the track which will eventually find their way to road cars, the Formula E championshipseason will include 10 races held on city roads. The only circuit the Formula E race will share with the Formula 1 race will be at Monaco. That too portions of the circuit rather than the full circuit. While drivers for the team are yet to decided, the car will be build by a group of race car builders. In fact, the group of race cars builders will build Formula E cars for all the teams, including the French team owned by Alain Prost, a well acknowledged Formula 1 driver of the yesteryear. Said Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, “We strongly believe that Formula E can provide an excellent global showcase for our electric vehicle technology. Racing will further accelerate that trend while Formula E is set to raise awareness globally about the benefits of electric vehicles”.
