According to media reports, sales of multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) have nosedived as prospective buyers lean towards the bevy of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) now available in the market. At 160,000 units at the end of FY16, the share of MPVs in overall sale of utility vehicles was down to a quarter from 35 per cent four years ago. In the backdrop of slipping sales in this segment, General Motors India said it has dropped plans to launch its ‘Spin’ MPV, which was scheduled for 2016-2017. In a statement it said it will instead listen to its customers and shift focus to growing segments, including SUVs.
