Rotary Engineering Corporation is a manufacturer of a wide range of hydraulically expanding jelly type work holding devices for auto components and aerospace components manufacturing industries. In an interview to Bhushan Mhapralkar, Kalpesh Mahidharia shared the journey of his company, its growth and vision.
What was the rationale behind the establishment of Rotary Engineering Corporation?
We saw an opportunity in the area of machine tools, i.e., specialised machine tools, especially mandrels. We also saw a need for quality machine tool components. The opportunity to turn out quality components (by quality conscious people) was the thinking behind the establishment of Rotary Engineering Corporation. If I may add, we also motivate our customers to produce world class quality components.
When was the company established, and what was the initial product offering like?
Rotary Engineering Corporation was established in 1968. Our initial product offering was in the area we specialise in – work holding devices for auto components and aerospace components. In 1981, we developed a hydraulically expanding collet for an auto ancillary unit. I took over as the director of the company in 1999. Over the years we have grown to implement new ideas, innovate and develop new products that will address the exacting needs of our customers.
What is the current product range of the company?
The current product range of the company comprises gear grinding mandrels, gear shaving mandrels, hydraulic expanding jelly type mandrels, collets, arbors, chucks, and horizontal and vertical machining fixtures for turning and boring application. With the use of our products, our customers can achieve high precision clamping and control run-out as well as perpendicularity parameters consistency.
Which are the products consumed by the automotive industry?
The products consumed by the auto industry include gear grinding mandrels for automobile gears; gear shaving mandrels for automobile gear shaving, and hydraulic jelly collets for connecting rod manufacturing industries.
Has the development of Gujarat as an auto hub made a positive impact for your company?
Yes. The development of Gujarat as an auto hub has made a positive impact. In fact, I would like to reiterate that Gujarat, and especially Rajkot, is referred to as Detroit for its auto industries.
What are the industrial sectors that you cater to, in addition to the auto industry?
Apart from the auto industry, we cater to the aerospace industry, the machine tools industry, and liner and bush manufacturers.
How would you describe the core competence of your company?
Our core competence is in the manufacture of mandrels. Mandrels with centre hole grinding and chamfer grinding features.
What is the manufacturing infrastructure of the company like?
We have a modern infrastructure spread over 3600 sq.ft, equipped with the best CNC turning and vertical machining centres, cylindrical and internal grinding machines. We also have a full-fledged tool room to cater to our needs.
What growth do you estimate to come to Rotary Mandrels?
We are expecting good growth in the field that we operate in. We are expecting good growth to come from the automotive industry, auto components manufacturers, aerospace industry and the marine industry.
Do you plan to introduce any new products?
Yes. We are planning to introduce new chucks and collets.
Who are your competitors?
I would like to answer this question a little differently. I would like to say that cheaper products might be easier to buy. They are however always expensive. This should also reflect on how we look at the competition.
