Yamaha Motor Company has set up an all-new R&D centre in Surajpur to
drive new product development in India. Yamaha Motor Research and
Development India (YMRI) in Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh will be the company’s R&D
headquarters in the country. The new facility will be used to optimise
production standards and help Yamaha design new low-cost two-wheelers
especially for the Indian market. The new R&D centre is also being targeted
for exports of the upcoming low cost commuters and developing parts for the
domestic as well as export markets.
Speaking on the occasion Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & Managing Director,
India Yamaha Motor said, “We at Yamaha strongly believe in constant innovation.
The R&D centre will help us to put channelised effort in conceptualisation
of new models and parts keeping in mind the changing customer preferences. This
will help us not only to develop models and parts for India market but also to
develop models and parts for export markets as well.”
Explaining the development further, Toshikazu Kobayashi, Managing
Director, Yamaha Motor Research and Development India said, “We plan to achieve
lowest cost models and parts in the world through INDRA (Innovative and New
Development based on Responsible Analysis) activity meant to provide optimized specification thorough
investigation in product life cycle. This activity will significantly help us in
reducing the cost yet rolling out products that meet all customer aspirations
and market standards.”
Yamaha has already started exporting engine parts to Indonesia and
selective Asian countries. The Japanese manufacturer has invested Rs 200 crores
in the new R&D centre. YMRI will be the fifth overseas R&D centre for
the Yamaha Motor Group having similar facilities in Italy, Thailand, Taiwan and
China. For the development of low-cost scooters, Yamaha will be completing the
setup of R&D Centre in Chennai which will be operational from 2015. Until
now, the scooters for the Indian market were being developed in Japan.
